These beautiful adornments are handmade and inspired by the necklaces worn by the Asmat people from the Papua Island, Indonesia.
The word Asmat literally translates to ‘people of the trees’, and their spiritual beliefs and practices center on nature, which they consider sacred. They cover their body parts with leaves or fibers of the forests that represent their intertwining with the natural surroundings. They also carry accessories like necklaces that are usually decorated with shells or stones. The necklaces of the Asmat tribes have high aesthetic value as they are worn in certain rituals. These necklaces also serve as a payment good or to barter with the neighboring tribes.
